The First Charter of Virginia; April 10, 1606 (edited version)

Author: The other of this document wasn't specifically addressed, but I would think the author would be someone of higher authority, possibly in Europe writing out the rules for the colonists. It also could be a leader of the colony writing out rules for the other colonists to follow.
Audience: Residence of Virginia Colonies
Tone: Serious, Calm
Purpose/Context: The main idea of this document is basically setting up and colonization in Virginia, with terms and conditions that come with the people settling in a new area.
The purpose of this document would be to inform not only the residents of Virginia but also the higher authorities running the colonies.
Persuasion:
-ethos-The author shows emotion in the document by his word choice. In the document, the author has excellent vocabulary that he uses to describe the organization of how life is supposed to be like in the colonies.
-pathos-The author shows credibility by his extensive knowledge of how the colony, and justice system was set up. His character really comes out by the proper word choice he uses. He was also very repetitive in all his paragraphs which shows how organized he is.
-logos-The author's logic sort of matches up with his credibility. The whole document seems logic just because of the way it it set up. It sounds like the author may have experience in leading and organizing a group of people.

Destruction of the Indies

In the article, the expert argues that the Spaniards extremely mistreated the natives in their homeland, and I agree because the natives showed no hostility toward the Spaniards when they first arrived, but the Spaniards still violently abused them. The expert also claims that the natives were obedient and loyal subjects and I have mixed feelings about this. On the one one hand, I agree that the natives were good people and had no true intention of hurting the Spaniards. On the other hand, I still insist that the expert might have been a little too dramatic about how perfect the natives were, because they are still human and humans always have some kind of fault. No one is perfect. In the recent discussions of how are country has been founded, a controversial issue has been whether it was truly necessary for the Spaniards to mistreat the natives in the way that they did. On the one hand, some argue that if the Spaniards didn't exert there power upon the natives, then they could not have claimed the land in the way that they did. From this perspective I can see this point because to some people, violence and domination means power. On the other hand, however, others argue that such violence wasn't truly necessary among the natives, and the Spaniards should have found an alternate way to accomplish their goal. My own view is agrees with the argument of finding an alternative way for the Spaniards to accomplish their goal. Though I concede that life was a little different back then, and the way the Spaniards reacted to different situations might have been a little different then today, I still maintain my opinion that the mistreatment of the natives could have been avoided. Although some might object that what happened was unavoidable and that no matter what this kind of stuff happens all throughout history, I reply that the best way to vitalize the past is to learn from it so that in the future we can strive not to make the mistake of our past ancestors. This issue is important because it is an important part of our past that relates to us today.

Writing Philosophy

The world today is filled with many people who love writing. Some dislike it, and some only are passionate about a particular subject. Many of us fit the description of having to be passionate about a writing topic to really put your heart into, but how do you write about something you aren't passionate about, without just the motivation of grades? I believe that it all begins with the set mood that you are in. It is all how you look at the situation. If you know that it isn't something that you want to write about and you are absolutely dreading writing about this topic, you are already off to a bad start. Looking at the topic in a positive way and not focusing on how much you don't want to write about it is already a good start to writing a paper with heart. While researching the topic, you will gain a new perspective, respect and more knowledge then you could've known before. If you focus on these positive outcomes of writing the on and unwanted topic instead automatically thinking negatively, you will notice that it will be easier to put more heart into all of your writing.

English Composition as a Happening

"English Composition as a Happening" by Charles Deemer is an article that talks about how the school system as a whole is corrupt, but more specifically The English Composition. Deemer begins to tell about the flaws wrong with the system such as the way the teacher presents his or herself in front of the class room and how if effects the way the students learn in the classroom. He comes up with a solution to restore The English Composition he referred to as the "happening". The purpose of the happening is to remove the traditional sense of a teacher with authority that sits up in front of the class and talks at the the students. The change begins with the teacher to find a way to connect with the class to inspire the class and reduce the distance between teacher and class to leave room for more discussions. Throughout the article, Deemer's paragraphs are separated by thoughtful quotes by professors or books. These quotes help support Deemer's main idea of changing the English Composition and help the reader reflect on Deemer's opinion and how it is supported by the opinions of others.

Social Justice

Social justice is when a form of justice is reached at every point of society. It is often split up into different topics such as politics or religion, anything that has to do with society and the way we live. Instead of having laws in different aspects of society, people often compromise, share ideas or make work efforts to express their opinion toward a social issue to them. Because everyone is entitled to their opinion, and if their opinion isn’t necessarily incorrect or unjust, society works its way to find the most just resolution.

Food production is a social justice issue that I’m passionate about. In the world today, the majority of people aren’t aware of the contents of the food they are eating. Throughout the United States many cases of BSE or mad cow disease have been found and other diseases such as E-coli have been found in food caused by bacteria.

Some causes of these diseases are simply poor regulation of the meet processing plants and whether they actually listen to the USDA’s standards of how the meat should be processed. Meat processing plants are often careless and tend to slack off on rules set by the USDA. Rules are often created for a reason and when they are not being followed, it can lead to unhealthy things, like the BSE that developed in infected meats. If there is no action taken toward this problem, then mad cow could become an even more threatening disease that could sweep through our country.

Often you will find brands of food that are organic or naturally healthier for you cost more. This isn’t fair because families with lower income or who want to have a healthier diet have to pay more, or choose the brands that have injected antibiotics or other chemicals that aren’t as good for you because they have no choice because they can’t afford it.

To help our foods to become healthier, the government also needs to regulate what the cows are being fed and processed before they are killed because mad cow disease often come from cows that are poorly fed and mistreated in plants. Once the government makes a bigger effort to be involved with this industry, and then there will be no need for the people to fear what they eat or have to pay more for healthier foods because it will create a safer healthier nation.

In conclusion, the problem of food safety is an important issue in the nation’s current events today. We should not ignore it. It is important because we eat food everyday and if people are getting sick from a something that is supposed to a necessity to you than that isn’t very good at all. It is important to acknowledge the problem now before it becomes bigger than it is now. If the government increases their security and knowledge about what is going on in meat processing plants and farms, then diseases such as mad cow or E. Coli will be less common and we will have a healthier America.
